Rich In Features
Tuesday, 25 March 2008

Every software package will have a distinct set of features and no set will be exactly the same. A very wise software consultant from outside of the flooring industry once told me that it is rare that you will find an off the shelf software package (not custom) that will be a perfect match but if you can find one that does at least 85% of everything you are looking for, then that package would be a good match.

A good example of a software product that is feature rich but not a good match would be Quickbooks. Quickbooks has a very mature, rich feature set and does a great job for some companies but when it comes to floor covering, the feature set begins to lack in some very big ways. Floor covering management systems are built for the industry and have many features that are lacking in Quickbooks. When trying to determine which features are important and which are not, sit down and make a prioritized feature list of everything you think you may need. Priority ‘A’ items you can’t do without and ‘D’s would be nice. Make sure that the highest priority features are on your list and consider any extras as a bonus. Lastly, it is very important that the features are easy to use. Sometime software companies will proclaim that they have certain features which is true but when is comes to being able to use the feature, that is a different story.
